NASCAR Shooting Shocks Neighborhood

MUDCAT FALLS -- A political candidate is dead and a likely voter is in jail facing murder charges for a Sunday afternoon shooting during the NASCAR UAW-Ford 500 race at the Talladega Superspeedway.

Nick Dixon was canvassing the South Hollow section of the city for votes in his uphill bid to replace incumbent City Council Chairman Sorrell Needleman, when he was confronted by an angry NASCAR fan armed with a .357 Magnum, who shot first and did not even ask any questions.

"I watched that damn race for nearly three hours and at the very end some political hack knocks on my door and starts spouting off on how he's gonna fix the world," said Harland Gibbs, who friends call a disturbingly fanatical stock car fan. "I missed the checkered flag and missed the race getting snaked away from Little E."

On the very last lap of the race, Brian Vickers stole his first Nextel Cup victory by nudging teammate Jimmie Johnson into race leader Dale Earnhardt Jr., then skirting by the two spinning cars, robbing what looked to be a certain victory for Earnhardt and a solid chance for Johnson to resurrect his fading Nextel Cup title hopes

According to neighbors who witnessed the incident, Dixon's last words were, "Don't Shoot! I'm a Republican! But I'm a Republican!"

Attorney Steve Dallas, who is representing Gibbs, said they would explore either a justifiable homicide or a temporary insanity defense, depending on the makeup of the jury.

Councilman Needleman expressed his condolences and predicted a landslide victory in the upcoming election.
