Send in the Clowns

Making my entrance again with my usual flair,
Sure of my lines -- no one is there.
Don't you love farce? My fault, I fear;
I thought that you'd want what I want - sorry my dear.

The more we watch cable news, the more Stephen Sondheim's megahit comes to mind as the most appropriate score for what we are watching.

The title refers to a phrase reputedly used in a circus when an unforeseen disaster had occurred, with the clowns being sent in to distract the audience from the problem. Alternatively, the title could refer to the practice in vaudeville theatre of sending the clowns on to the stage to distract the audience after a particularly bad act.

Either way, with amazing number of pundits spilling noisily out of our television set after every unforseen disaster or bad act, the darn thing reminds us more and more of a clown car belching smoke as it pulls into the center ring to unload its cargo of mayhem.
