Fraud, Lies and Video Tape
MUDCAT FALLS -- The owners of the Planet Video store in the downtown Barleycorn District closed down operations suddenly yesterday after word leaked that authorities had uncovered a massive fraud scheme.
"Acting on a tip from a concerned consumer, we learned that our citizens were being charged rewind fees for DVDs," said Calabash County District Attorney Jack Meddlemeister. "Apparently, this has been going on for several years and has totaled
over half a million dollars, though we are not quite sure if an actual crime has been committed."
The Mudcat Falls store, owned by Planet Video Enterprises of Pistol Creek Junction, Inc., was the only location of twelve in the Tri-State area, which charged the rewind fees.
"It's like they've been taking the pizza right out of the mouths of my kids," said a clearly distressed local resident, Rodney Slackjaw, who showed up late yesterday to find the doors pad locked. "And now how am I gonna rent
Dukes of Hazzard
?"
Calls to the Pistol Creek Junction headquarters of the store's parent company for comment were answered with giggles and "No comment."
